Moving Day Breaks: Chicago Craft Beer

Craft brew and moving day go perfect together.

It’s one of those sweltering, humid summer days in Chicago, where the temperature reads 97 degrees but it feels like 110 degrees. Lucky for you, it’s the day you’re moving into your new Hansen Rental. You’ve sweat through every inch of your clothing, and you still have another truck to unload.  While hydrating yourself with gallons of water is the smart thing to do, taking a break to enjoy a delicious craft beer or two never hurt anyone (H2O is part of the brewing process, after all).

Try these local favorites…

If you’re in Lincoln Park:

Goose Island Brewpub Clybourn (1800 North Clybourn Avenue)

Tips: There’s a beer premier and toast every Thursday at 6 PM (sit in the bar are to get a free sample) and a new Farmer’s Market beer every Monday.

Must Try:

Matilda – Belgian Pale Ale

Summer School – German Style Hefeweizen

Willow Street Wit – Belgian Witbier

** If you’re in Lakeview: Try Goose Island Wrigleyville (3535 North Clark Street)

Tips: Live bands every weekend! Check the schedule here.

If You’re in North Center/Lincoln Square:

The Bad Apple (4300 North Lincoln Avenue)

Tips: Not only does it have one of the best beer lists in Chicago, but Bad Apple is also one of the best burger places in the city.

Must Try:

Virtue Redstreak Cider – English style draft cider

Port Anniversary Ale – Very hoppy, strong Pale Ale.

Arcadia B-Craft – Black double IPA

If You’re in Wicker Park/Bucktown/Logan Square

Revolution (2323 North Milwaukee Avenue)

Tips: This nearly three year old Logan Square brewery just opened a new production brewery and tap room on Kedzie Avenue.  Also, three words – Bacon Fat Popcorn.

Must Try:

Anti-hero IPA – India Pale Ale made with four different hop varietals

Rosa – Ale aged in Hibiscus

Rise – American stout with chocolate and coffee notes

If You’re Close to the West Loop

Haymarket (737 West Randolph):

Tips: The Drinking and Writing Brewery radio show takes place in the back of this West Loop brewpub named after the 1886 riot. They serve coffee and have great comedy shows as well.

Must Try

Mathias Imperial IPA – IPA made with Citra hops.

Lucy’s Belgian Style Abbey Tripel – strong golden ale made with hints of ripe fruit and spice.

Blacksox Porter – dark malty ale brewed with hints of chocolate covered orange aroma.
